Structuring Your Child Care Business

One of the most important decisions that you will make in the start-up process is choosing how you will structure your childcare business.

In fact, the way that you structure your childcare business will be a determining factor in how you will pay your taxes or if you will pay more or less taxes.

Moreover, your business structure that you choose will help to reduce your personal liability or expose you to being personally liable for business debt or even a lawsuit.

One year into owning a family home childcare business, my license specialist inspired me to change my business structure to protect my personal assets such as my home and other personal assets.

After I changed my business structure, it slightly changed the way that I filed my taxes, however I was relieved of the thought of being personally responsible in the event of a lawsuit. In fact, my name was even removed from the license and the new company name was placed on the license after I changed my business structure.

According to the Internal Revenue Services, “the most common forms of business are as follows:
  • Sole proprietorship
  • Partnership
  • Corporation
  • S corporation
  • A Limited Liability Company (LLC) is a relatively new business structure allowed by state statute. Legal and tax considerations enter into selecting a business structure.”

Naming Your Child Care Business

Naming your business is a very important decision. In fact, the name of your business is a reflection of your brand and will also attract parents to you childcare business.

Before you name your business, it is very important that you check to see if another childcare facility is not  using the name that you desire to have. A great place to start is with the secretary of state office in your city.

If the name is not taken, be sure to secure the name right away. You can secure the name by filing a fictitious name report. Also, if you plan on being a corporation, file your LLC paper work at the same time.

Moreover, it is also vital that you have a website for your childcare business, because many parents are browsing the internet looking for childcare. So, with this in mind, you also want to secure your domain name for your website.

For example, you may want to name your child care business; Teddy Bear Kids. So with that name in mind, log on to the internet and type www.teddybearkids.com. If that domain name is not taken, be sure to secure it right away with a web host. Website Hosting

Also, do a google search of Teddy Bear Kids. If the name is already taken, its time to choose another name.

Creating a Start-up Budget Is a Vital Part of Starting a Child Care Business

Starting a business without creating a start-up budget is like going to the grocery store without a shopping list. Have you ever noticed that when you go to the grocery store without a shopping list, that you tend to over spend or make impulsive purchases?

Well, it is vital that you avoid impulsive spending during your start-up process, because every penny counts!

Starting up a business and not having a budget is very similar to the scenario that I described above and this is why it is vital that you to create a start-up budget for that child care business.

Moreover, having a start-up budget will provide you with an overview of how much money it will take to start that child care business.

Let's take a look at a sample budget for starting up a small child care center:
** Your start-up budget is not limited to the items listed below

Down Payment on the Building $2,000
1st month's Rent $2,000
New Sign  $1500
Classroom Equipment $8,000
Office Equipment $2,000
Used Van $5,000
Building Renovations $5,000
Marketing Materials/Open House $2,000
Playground Equipment $2,000
Kitchen Equipment $3,000
Business License fees, etc. $300

Total Start-up Cost:$32,800

*The sample budget listed above is only meant to give you an idea of what needs to be included in your start-up budget. Also, if you are expanding from a home-daycare to a center, you may not need to purchase much office equipment and and you may already have classroom materials, which will lower your classroom equipment cost.

Much Success to You!
